HAIR TRANSPLANT SURGERY. WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

These procedures can be performed on both me and women and are performed under local anaesthetic where small follicular (hair) unit grafts are taken from the rear of the scalp and replanted in the areas of thinning/balding.

These grafts contain one – three hairs in their grouping and the number of grafts needed will be determined by the degree of hair loss. As the hair is taken and replanted on the same individual, this makes the transplant appear natural and undetectable.

This replanted hair is permanent and can be treated in the same regard as the rest of the hair. It can be coloured, cut, curled, straightened.

WHAT IS FUT?

The most popular method for hair loss, Follicular Unit Transplantation involves the removal of a strip of hair-bearing skin from the back of the scalp. The small grafts of hair within the strip are cut from the skin and replanted in the desired areas. The area of excised skin is stitched up to ensure hair will regrow through the thin scar created.

The results of this method depend heavily on the skill of the surgeon and careful consideration of the hairline, angle and direction of the hair and precise replantation of the grafts.

WHAT IS FUE?

Follicular Unit Excision utilises a hold punch-like device that cuts the grafts from the back of the scalp. One-by-one the grafts are extracted and planted similarly to FUT.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A HAIR TRANSPLANT?

Hair transplantation is a no real downtime, one day procedure. The grafted area may present with small scabs the following day however these will shed on their own within 7-10 days. Some of the hairs in the transplantation area may shed and begin growing with the next cycle which is generally 12 – 15 weeks. Hair growth and visible results begin appearing at the 4 – 8 month mark.

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS THE PROCEDURE?

When performed by highly skilled hair transplant surgeons, the results are extremely successful with at least 90% of the hair growing in the new area.

HOW MANY GRAFTS WILL I NEED AND WHAT IS THE COST?

This will be determined upon consultation with Dr Vikram. Number of grafts and pricing will vary depending on the size of the area/s requiring treatment.

WHAT AREA/S OF HAIR LOSS CAN BE TREATED?

Dr Vikram specialises in hairlines and eyebrows for both men and women however other areas such as male facial hair can also be treated.
